DIRECTORATE OF RADIATION SAFETY |
Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules, 2004 demand that all medical diagnostic X-ray equipments must be registered with the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). The radiation safety requirements, that are to be strictly adhered to, are specified in the AERB Safety Codes. Nevertheless, X-ray units are being installed and operated all over India defying all set rules and safety standards.
Government of India and Atomic Energy Regulatory Board have issued directives to all States to formulate their own Directorate of Radiation Safety to enforce the Rules, Codes and Guidelines of AERB on medical diagnostic X-ray installations to ensure radiation safety and enforce mandatory regulatory compliance.
In August, 2012, State Health Society, Government of Bihar has set up the Directorate of Radiation Safety i¬n Bihar under the administrative control of the Secretary, Health cum Executive Director and submitted a Project Document to AERB. Service of the Directorate of Radiation Safety will be available to all X-ray owners and institutions in Bihar soon after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Government of Bihar and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.
All the X-ray units; Cath labs, CT Scanners, General X-ray or that with CR/DR, C-Arm, Mobile, Portable, Mammography, BMD, OPG, IOPA, etc. installed or working in Bihar must be Licensed or Registered with AERB. Users are advised to download and follow the guidelines given by AERB to get their X-ray units Registered. Please note that Interventional units (Cath labs) and CT Scanners must have Licence while all other X-ray units shall have Registration. Directorate of Radiation Safety will help X-ray Owners/Users in complying with safety standards and in obtaining Licence / Registration from AERB.
